The Cyber Security Skills Gap
The recent shift in the approach to working, and how people work means that more people are keen to upskill, not only in their specific areas of expertise but in new fields. If we exclude cyber security professionals already working directly in cyber sector companies, 85% of the people fulfilling cyber roles in the private sector have transitioned into this position from a previous non-cyber role. These statistics show that it is possible to retrain and upskill into cybersecurity even if you are not familiar with the field at first.
However, despite the retraining numbers, there is still a huge skills shortage in cybersecurity. A 2022 Ipsos report on Cyber-Security skills in the UK labour market writes:
“Approximately 697,000 businesses (51%) have a basic skills gap. That is, the people in charge of cyber security in those businesses lack the confidence to carry out the kinds of basic tasks laid out in the government-endorsed Cyber Essentials scheme and are not getting support from external cyber security providers. The most common of these skills gaps are in setting up configured firewalls, storing or transferring personal data, and detecting and removing malware”
Gaining Cyber Security Skills
At Principle Defence, not only do we want to encourage business owners to protect their businesses through skill development, we want to encourage individuals to retrain and learn the cyber skills they need to gain employment, progress in their careers, and protect the organisations they support. A skills shortage in cyber security is a global issue and there is an estimated shortfall of 3.5 million cyber security professionals worldwide.
Some of the soft skills that really benefit those looking to retrain in cyber security include:
- Analytical Thinking
- Strong communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Being able to work as part of a tem
